Wet rot

Dry rot

Dry rot is caused by fungus infestation, causing the wood to deteriorate and decay. Dry rot can be identified by darkness and cracks in the timber, fruiting fungal bodies – usually with red, rust coloured dust around them – or a wool-like growth, which looks very much like cotton wool. Dry rot can be caused by leaking pipes, washing machine leaks, showers, humidity, etc.
Action required:

Fungicide
Replacement of timbers
Sterilisation
Re-plastering
Dry rot

Wet rot

Although wet rot is far easier to control than dry rot, and does not travel through masonry, it is still important to treat it as soon as it is spotted. Wet rot is caused by high moisture content and most commonly occurs in very damp areas or areas with poor ventilation.

Action required:

Determine the source of the moisture
Test any timbers affected
Replace or remove any affected timber
Remove fungal growth
